After a few weeks of no show, Pagan Weekly News is back and running! During the month of December Phil (aka RevKess) ran into some minor scheduling conflicts with his bills-paying-job and was not able to do shows. Apparently he also forgot to make sure that Zaracon had the login information so he could go solo. That, at least, has been fixed and Phil is working with his scheduling manager to ensure that he has most Mondays off from work, or at least the hours needed to do PWN.

That being said, the first edition of PWN for 2012 went off pretty well. Only one sound issue, Phil forgetting to unmute himself, and Z had to leave before the end of the show due to personal reasons.

January 2012 Full Moon Show on the Mess

Looking back over the last few months, I see that have been rather neglectful of this blog. Something does seem to happen to me often. In an attempt to correct that, I am going to begin again with posting play lists from Murphy's Magic Mess on Lincoln's KZUM and show notes from the various talk shows I do.

We begin with the January 2012 full moon play list from Murphy's Magic Mess. Airing on January 8th, this play list is a combined effort by Murf, Corwin and myself. The show started out with me behind the boards. Rather frustratingly, the previous show ran up right to the hour and left me seconds to get set up. But we muddled through the first hour without too much trouble. Murf moved over to the boards shortly after the top of the second hour and took over from there. Corwin selected a few pieces here and there towards the bottom of the hour. We all hope that our listeners enjoyed the selection.

Mabon on the Mess with Murf, Corwin & Phil

Sister Gladys from the Glorious Gospel headed out a little early this morning, so we popped in some music and went with it for the last ten minutes or so of her show. Starting with some Candice Night and Hennie Bekker before going into our usual intro of Wytches’ Chant ‘98.

To celebrate Mabon, we had a little journey into the Darkness of the year, a visit with Baba Yaga, the Russian Crone Goddess, and ended with a little visit from Cernunnos, Lord of the Hunt and Forest. The linked YouTube video for the Baba Yaga threesome is courtesy Cindy, who hosted Spiral Dance on KZUM in the late 80's and early 90's. Murf was her minion back in the day, and it is thanks to Cindy and the Wimmin's Show that we KZUM has provided new age and Pagan music to its listeners for over 20 years.

Hello, everyone! I am once again playing catch up with the blogging. This year has been extremely busy for me and I have neglected posting all summer long. Here it is, the first few days Autumn and I haven't made a timely post since Memorial Day. And believe me, I do hear about it. At least one of the wonderful people who follows this blog sends me an email from time to time going "where are the play lists?"

Early in the show, Cole Weber from Liberty Lives in the HEARTland called in to share with us about the Nebraska efforts to counter-demonstrate the DC40 Campaign. DC40 is a movement orchestrated by the New Apostolic Reformation and other extremist right wing Christian groups to pray for the mass conversion of United States politicians to their specific way of thinking. Read the information on their web site, if you dare, and after struggling through the horrible (and disgusting) imagery of their informational videos and wading through the hate filled rhetoric they spew, you will understand just why we need to take this effort seriously. To sum it up, they are backing certain political candidates in the upcoming presidential election (including Gov. Rick "Good Hair" Perry of Texas) and wish to force a theocracy upon the nation. We also spent some time talking about Jenna Greene's Kickstarter campaign and her music. I had the pleasure of interviewing Ms. Greene earlier this month on a special episode of Musica Pagani and delving deeper into her wonderful music. Check out the interview and visit her web site, then pop over and see if you feel you can contribute to her Kickstarter program to help bring us more delightful music. Ms. Greene was unable to join us during the show due to other commitments last night, but we look forward to having her on the Channel again sometime in the near future. Her Kickstarter deadline is October 11th, go check it out.

And of course, with it being our Mabon episode, we spent some time discussing the lore, imagery, meanings, and associations with the season.

I want to share a little something that I talked about in the show. When I was a kid, we honored the changing of the seasons. We may not have phrased it that way or even acknowledged that what we did was even remotely Pagan or some such, but we still did it. I spent the first eight years of my life on a cattle ranch in rural Colorado. You can't help but experience the seasons when you live in the country. The leaves changing colors, the animals growing thicker coats, and the harvesting of the fruits, vegetables, grains and other growing things. It was all there for us to witness first hand. Later we lived in small towns and rural communities; my mother would decorate the house with fall colors, leaves, gourds, and other images of the season. To this day I recall playing in the leaves (whether out of doors or in our own living room) and celebrating the seasons.

And of course, to finish out the show, we discussed our upcoming venture at Mystic Fest 2011 Fall Edition in Omaha, NE. Pangaia Metaphysical Store, the Pagan Alliance Network and Pagan-Musings Podcast Channel will be represented at the event. Thanks to our friends at Next Millennium Music and Gifts and Magical Omaha for putting on such a wonderful show every fall! Mystic Fest is located at the Ramada Plaza and Convention Center at 72nd and Grover in Omaha, just off the interstate, in the Heartland Room Saturday, October 1st from 10am-6pm and Sunday, October 2nd from 11am-5pm. Pagan-Musings: Parental Deities 5/28/11

Greetings and welcome my friends! I have obviously fallen way behind on my posts. I am still working on reconstructing everything that is missing for the last two or three months, but in the meantime, I am going to do my best to get the current stuff posted. So, here we go:

This Saturday's edition of Pagan-Musings discussed parental deities and patron deities. KaliSara and I (RevKess) discussed in brief several maternal deities or Mother Goddesses and moved on to the difficulties of finding Father Gods or paternal deities that are not the Christian God, Yahweh, El, Allah, etc.

The bulk of our discussion focused on patron deities, however. We spent a good portion of the show discussing our own personal deities and why we chose them or why we think they chose us.

Obviously, KaliSara's patron God is Kali from Hindu mythology and you can find out a bit more on her choices and beliefs by reading her own blog. She has not made a post since October, but that is understandable. She is a mother of two, both under the age of five, and is a very busy woman with a full time job and the web-mistress duties and paperwork involved with our online business, Pangaia Metaphysical Store.

Speaking for myself, however, I can go into a bit more detail here about my own patrons. On a personal level, I have two patron Gods and two patron Goddesses. They are Asclepius and Thoth and Sekhmet and Ma'at. Yes, I know that Asclepius comes from the Greek while the other three come from the Egyptian.

I more or less chose Asclepius as one of my patrons. He is the Greek God of physicians and healers. I am not a doctor, nor am I a traditional healer. But when he came into my life, I needed a lot of emotional healing. I had been through a VERY tough period in my life. Adding to the loss of my father at a very young age, I had also dealt with many difficult situations in my early childhood and teen years which required indepth reflection and a few visits to a therapist. In Asclepius, I found something that I was not getting from counseling, I found someone who truly listened to what I had to say and really cared about my feelings and emotions. He has inspired me to study psychology, aromatherpay and herbology. That part of my journey is very much an on-going task, as is dealing with some of the emotional and psychological scarring from my youth.

Thoth, on the other hand, chose me. I was attending a guided meditation group one evening and we were asked to visit with our patron Gods in the meditation. We were told that the Gods that appeared to us may not be who we expect and that they have a very important message for us. Well, I was not expecting Thoth. I was expecting Asclepius or some other Greek God. Even though I had (and still do) a deep affinity for all things Egyptian, I was not expecting a visit from one of the male deities of Egypt. At best, I was expecting Bast or some other Mothering deity.

Thoth, the Egyptian God of scribes, appeared to me as a full bodied ibis, the bird who's head he wears. This ibis was drawing heiroglyphs in the sand when he first appeared. But as I sat and watched, patiently waiting to see and hear what message this bird would have for me, it approached me and began to draw the symbols on my body. A most amazing experience.

That encounter later led to a past life memory which I have briefly discussed in other episodes of Pagan-Musings. But in short, I had a flash of my own death at a time in the history of Ancient Egypt. From what I can recall, I was a priest of Aten (has formerly been a priest of Ra) who was hiding his true beliefs from his patron and ruler, Akenaten. When Akenaten was deposed, all his advisers and priests were sentenced to death. As I had sided with him, for political reasons and to save my own skin, I was one of those sentenced. *cringe* Death by drowning in sand is horrid. Enough on that, though.

On to the Goddesses in my life, or at least two of them.

Sekhmet invaded my life one night, again during a meditation. I say invaded because sometimes she chooses to do things the abrupt and violent manner. I had always been attracted the cat deities of Africa, in particular to Bast. As a cat lover, that make some sense. But Sekhmet had other plans for me. Bast is generally a soft, gentle and playful Goddess; while Sekhmet still embraces those traits, she is also a fierce defender and can be very aggressive when it is for the betterment of her children.

Like on of my cats, Sekhmet moved herself into my life and made herself at home. I had very little choice in the matter, but have since grown to embrace her as a patron and to fully embrace some of her characteristics. I have become very protective of both my cats and of the children in my life. I am not a parent myself, but I have been involved in the raising of several children and am an uncle at least two dozen times over (I lost count). Along with the actual children in my life, I am looked upon by many as a teacher and (dare i say it) spiritual leader. Thus, it has fallen to me to step in as Dad a few times and set someone's feet back on the correct path for them. Never an easy task and not one that I take lightly.

Which brings me to the patron Goddess I did choose. Ma'at.

Ma'at is the goddess of balance and stability in Egypt. Ever heard the cliche "everything has it's place"? That could very easily be attributed to Ma'at. Seeking to find the balance in life, I turned to Ma'at at an early age. I was lucky enough to be introduced to Egyptian mythology and later religion when I was in 3rd grade (attending a church school no less). Ma'at was one of the Goddesses of Egypt to that reached out to me, or I to her. Not really sure at this stage of the game. She enabled me to make a little bit more sense of things and to continue on as an almost "normal" person. I put that in quotes, because no one is truly "normal" by societies definition, especially not someone who is self-aware.

As a teacher and spiritual leader in my community, I find that turning to this Goddess can help me find a better way of addressing issues, talking to individuals and explaining situations to the general public. She places a single feather on a scale to balance against the heart of the deceased. I do hope that when my time comes at the end of this life that my heart and her feather are balanced.

Phil Plays Catch Up

Well, my friends. Looks like I have been rather neglectful of this blog for about two months. I am playing catch up on a lot of things. No excuses!

As I write this I am editing an episode of Selections from the Mess and preparing for tomorrow's Murphy's Magic Mess. So I am multitasking the best I can and trying to get caught up.

Just to give you all an update on how things are going in the World of Phil: Since my last post in March I have been working hard to get several things organized and moving. My paying job has been keeping me busy with certification requirements and keeping me on overnight (not a happy Phil). The radio station has gone through some changes - all for the good in the end. We conducted our Spring Pledge Drive with a goal of $50,000 and we exceeded that goal; our program director left us after 18 months for greener pastures (ie, to live near to his girlfriend in Chicago); Corwin and Ihave been doing our best to get guests onto Lavender Hill and we are working well with Murf on the Mess. Sarah and I have been arranging guests on Pagan-Musings and succeeding in doing so. Since Kaedrich's visit in March we had Frater Teneo of Omaha Thelema join us to discuss the Book of the Law and Judika Illes on to talk about her many books. Keep checking back this week for playlist and show note updates to get us all caught up since March. And to finish off the distractions from blogging, Sarah and I attended Mystic Fest Spring Edition in Omaha as vendors Beltaine weekend. We skipped doing an episode of Pagan-Musings that weekend and are just now getting ourselves sorted out so we can prepare for Contagion:Outbreak in June, also in Omaha.

So with all the busy-busy, not only have I neglected my blogging, I missed deadlines for two article submissions. I was to write an article for the Witches' Hour eZine and another for Proud Pagan Podcasters. I was even given extensions by both outlets, and still failed to finish on time. I am going to polish up what I have and submit both articles all the same. I hope to be able to write regularly for the Witches' Hour and hope that my contribution to PPP will help increase our listener base for PMPC.

So, back to editing and preparing for the rest of the shows this weekend. Remember to tune into Murphy's Magic Mess every Sunday at 9am Central on KZUM followed by Lavender Hill at 11am. And of course, listen to Pagan-Musings every Saturday at 2pm on BTR.

Lavender Hill #3

Phil's throat was getting a little scratchy by the time he and Corwin wrapped up Murphy's Magic Mess and got ready to do the Lavender Hill segment of the Wimmin's Show on KZUM-HD 89.3FM in Lincoln, NE. But the show must go on. :)

A lot of stuff was covered during the show, as usual.

Corwin touched base on the anti-gay sentiment in the Muslim community in London's East End. Good for the gays! Despite the posters and slogans throughout the area, they are organizing a Pride parade for the East End.

Phil brought up that Sandra Dunn, an M-F transgendered woman is running for mayor of Amarillo, TX. Not the first transgendered person to run for office, and if she wins, she won't be the first to do that either.

Acceptance of gay marriage is on the rise in the U.S. According to polls, there has been a 7% shift in favor in the last two years. This puts the support and dissent at nearly a 50-50 split. But times are a changing. From March 4, 2010 to March 4th of this year, 700 hundred gay and lesbian couples were married in Mexico City. If our neighbors south of the border can suuport gay marriage, the U.S. should be able to.

In other news:

One of the Disney animators who worked on the Lion King says that it is only a matter of time before gay families start appearing in Disney films.
Filing your taxes as a same-sex couple (in those states where it is legal) is a bit complicated if using TurboTax.
We mentioned it last week, but it is worth mentioning again. The U.S. Supreme Court protects "hate speech" by the Westboro Baptist Church as part of the Freedom of Speech Amendent.
LBGTQNation asks why "gays don't win Oscars."
An open letter to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in California to "lift the ban on gay marriage."
West Virginia gay-rights bill dies in legislative session.
the state of Washington recognizes same-sex marriages from other states.

Murf Eats a Bad Knight

Greetings and pardon me for the delay in posting the show notes for the Mess. Seems that Blogger had some issues and decided to not give me access to my account for a little while. That is getting bothersome. Second time this has happened in a month. Anyway...

We were without Murf this Sunday as she ate something that didn't agree with her. Corwin and I carried the show pretty well. Even managed to get a half way decent recording of the show. If people would stop messing with the settings on the recording equipment it would have been even better.

P-M: Runes in Every Day Life

First off, I would like to thank our marvelous guest, Kaedrich Olsen, for joining us once again on Pagan-Musings Podcast. It is always a pleasure to speak with Kaedrich on any topic, but especially on his favorite subject, the runes. This weeks episode of Pagan-Musings was no exception to that.

We spent the whole show talking about runes and how they are used every day. Kaedrich shared some of the history of the runes and their meanings with us throughout the show. He even answered some rune divination questions over the air and through the BTR chat room.

Needless to say, a two hour show is just enough time to cover everything that we tried to squeeze in. We are inviting Kaedrich back sometime this summer for a two hour show on the rune meanings. He says he can fit all 24 runes into a two hour class, so we shall see if he can manage it with a two hour show. If not, then there is always a part two.

Prayer for Peace

This week on the Mess we helped celebrate with the rest of the Pagan community our uniqueness and diversity throughout the world. February 27th was the Prayer for Peace Vigil in many cities across the nation and around the globe. This vigil was a peaceful demonstration in response to the Catholic Truth Society's little pamphlet called Wicca and Witchcraft: Understanding the Dangers. A pamphlet aimed at teaching the Catholic community how to prosthelytise to and covert Wiccans and Witches to the Catholic faith.

Animal Guides

Greetings and thank you for listening to another episode of Pagan-Musings Podcast. Saturday the 26th we talked about animal guides and totem animals. KaliSara's boyfriend, Stormcrow, called in during the show to talk about Chakra Totems and using plants as a spirit guides. Very interesting.

RevKess's main animal totem is the Dolphin, but he has several animal guides that appear throughout his life. The Eagle when Heru is trying to get his attention, the Crow when he is getting too smug, Praying Mantis when he needs to stop and look at what he is doing, and Cat when he forgets that he is an independent person who does not require the approval of others.

KaliSara had an experience with an animal totem meditation in which she communicated with the Spotted Skunk.

People's experience withe Animal Guides and Totems varies far and wide. One thing to remember when seeking to meet and communicate with your Animal Spirits and Totems is to research the animal. Use some of the books listed below, but also do mundane research. Learn the animal for yourself. And if you run across the animal in your daily activities, talk with it.

Lady Cynthia vists the Mess

Lady Cynthia from the Order of the Red Grail, Church for Transformational Wicca joined us this week to talk about Elizabeth Dodd's pamphlet Wicca and Witchcraft: Understanding the Dangers put out by the Catholic Truth Society.

On Sunday, February 27th there will be a Prayer for Peace Vigil on the north steps of the Lincoln Capitol Building from 10am to noon. This is in conjunction with several similar prayer vigils nation wide and around the globe. The issue that many Pagans, especially Witches and Wiccans, take with this new pamphlet is that it specifically targets Wicca and Witchcraft for conversion. The 27th is also the anniversary of Pope John XXII's papal bull "the theory of witchcraft" which was at the root of the Inquisition.

PMPC Spring Cleaning & Pagan Charities

Hello to one and all! It has been a rather eventful week or so for Pagan-Musings Podcast Channel. We have been adding a variety of music programs through Musica Pagani and Selections from the Mess. You can check them out on our BTR page.

Today we did an episode of Pagan-Musings talking about Spring Cleaning and Pagan Charities.

It may seem a little early to talk about spring cleaning, but in my opinion it is never to early to plan what to do with your Schtuff. As we are coming out of the cold and dark of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, naturally our thoughts turn towards the warm and light time of the year. We look around our homes and see what we have not done, not out of laziness but out of comfort. We see stacks of papers that have accumulated, bills and receipts, unanswered letters and holiday cards, etc. We also notice that as the weather begins to warm up we want to think about doing those things we have put off. For me that is cleaning the apartment. Don't think that I am a terrible house keeper with piles of dirty laundry and dishes that could walk themselves to the sink. This may seem to happen sometimes, though....

What I am talking about is getting rid of the clutter that has gathered over the last few months. I am a pack rat, I freely admit it. I have stacks of books, newspapers, junk mail and other schtuff cluttering my desk and office space. As I look around at it all I cringe to think of how much schtuff I have left undone during the winter. I want to get organized. And one of the best ways to do that is to start somewhere and clean.

Along with cleaning comes Cleansing. On Pagan-Musings we have talked about this before. As you clean out the clutter you also Cleanse the space. You can use special cleaners that are enchanted or spelled to help you rid the home of negativity. You can also, after finishing a room or project burn some sage, sweetgrass or other herbal incense to Cleanse the space and purify the air. Either way you look at it, you are making your home a better, healthier place to be.

Charity also comes to mind during this time of year for me. I am passionate about certain worthy causes and only wish that I had more time and money to donate to these causes. Weekly I spend at least two hours volunteering at KZUM, our local community radio station, working on Murphy's Magic Mess. At the Mess we bring our listeners a variety of New Age and Pagan music every Sunday from 9-11am. Oddly enough, the show is on right after the gospel program. I have recently (as readers of this blog and listeners to PMPC know) added Lavender Hill - a segment on the Wimmin's Show - to my KZUM hours and been asked to stay after to help the host of the Wimmin's Show produce her program. Between recording the Mess, doing the Hill and working behind the scenes with the Wimmin's Show I donate at least five hours a week to KZUM and the local community.

I also spend a good deal of time working towards reaching the goals of the Pagan Alliance Network, helping to build and create Pagan community. Not just on the local level, but world wide. I am focused on helping to get the networking mindset out to the global Pagan community. This spring I will be spending more time on that project, as well as other community projects, to help create a better awareness of the Pagan community in the larger global community. Websites, social networking, blog writing and essay/article projects will assist in that. Working directly with other local and national Pagan groups will help with that.

My cohost on Pagan-Musings Podcast also has plans for charitable work in the future. Namely, her and her partner have been seriously talking about becoming foster parents. A very worthy cause and one that I support them him. I love children and have pondered adoption or fostering myself. More power to them, as the saying goes.

The Debut of Lavender Hill

I have wanted to do an LBGTQ news and talk radio program for sometime now. All these past two years at KZUM, in fact. I've always wanted to do a Pagan news and talk program at KZUM, but that is another story.

In all the years that I have been listening to KZUM, I do not recall a program specifically geared towards the LBGTQ community. Sure, they have the Wimmin's Show Sundays at 11am Central (used to be at 11:30, right after W.I.N.G.S.) and other similar shows - directed at women and lesbians. But that doesn't quite fit the bill.

Back in September, Corwin (one of Murf's minions) and I both suggested such a show to the program director. Oddly enough, we did this independent of each other. I brought it up again after the annual programmer's appreciation party in January. The program director is supportive of the idea, but doesn't know where to put us for sure. Corwin and I also discussed it with Deb from the Wimmin's show after it was announced that we would no longer be carrying W.I,N.G.S. She loved the idea.

Well, we are doing it a little bit differently than we had originally planned. Instead of being our own independent show, starting this Sunday (February 20, 2011), Lavender Hill will debut as a segment of the Wimmin's Show. As Deb put it, we will be the Min of the Wimmin's Show. She has also asked me to stay through her entire show as technical adviser and producer.

Let's see, that gives me how many shows (between KZUM and the internet)? Hmmm....

Well, folks. At Pagan-Musings Podcast Channel we have been doing some changes. We are keeping the Pagan-Musings Podcast as it is, a talk show with some music, news, interviews, and random babbling from RevKess and KaliSara. But we are adding several new programs to our list.

Selections from the Mess is just such a program. It is a weekly special series from Musica Pagani, hosted and produced by RevKess, featuring the pod-friendly music from that week's episode of Murphy's Magic Mess on KZUM-HD 89.3FM in Lincoln, NE. The original, full length show airs and streams live on Sundays at 9am Central, bringing the listener two full hours of New Age and Pagan music enjoyment. Whenever possible, RevKess will be taking cuts straight from in studio recording of that week's show. This first episode unfortunately had to be pieced together from his own music archives as the gain was set wrong on the recording equipment and there was major sound distortion.

Full Beaver Moon – November: This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon.

Out of nowhere there was a big mastiff-like dog that started following him around. One night it appeared in his house. John tried to leave and the dog wouldn't let him. it sat in front of the door and growled at him and bared it's teeth. One story said it sat on him, I think. The assassins were waiting outside. The dog didn't move until they left.

Pagan-Musings: Metaphysical Expos & Pagan Festivals

Wowsa! Just finished doing some house keeping after today's episode of Pagan-Musings. What a day! And what a wonderful show! As usual, we seemed to have gotten off on a couple of tangents and had a few technical issues. But we are growing used to that when it comes to working with BTR. Well, at least the technical glitches. The tangential conversations are just part of who we are on P-M.

Today's episode was a discussion of past, present, and future metaphysical expos and pagan festivals. Between KaliSara and I, we have experienced a wide range of such events.

KaliSara has been lucky enough to attend Heartland Festival at Gaia Park in Missouri where she learned a lot about Paganism when she was just starting out on her path. Not to mention that she got some exposure to some of the less prudish aspects of Paganism. One day soon, we both will attend Heartland, either as participants or as vendors.

Coming up next weekend Mystic Fest. This will be Pangaia Metaphysical Store's second time with the event and the Pagan Alliance Network's third. I have been doing something with Mystic Fest for four years now. My first year I was the official helper of my friend and seamstress, Fay. She is the owner of Wytch Way Wear and can be found at Pangaia Metaphysical Store as Crone's Creations. My second year was KaliSara's first year. We ran the table for what was then called the Pagan Alliance of Nebraska. In 2009, we changed the name to Pagan Alliance Network to better reflect our broader reach in the pagan community and also brought Pangaia into the mix for Mystic Fest.

We are looking forward to a wonderful experience next week with Mystic Fest. With over 70 vendors, readers, and other participants at the event, there is sure to be something for everyone. You can find out more about Mystic Fest by visiting www.next-mil.com.
We have also attend other events as vendors.
We attended last year's Earth-Spirit-Celebration (nicknamed Escape) in Lincoln, NE. It was the first time out for Here & Back Again and they have not repeated the event yet. But it was still a successful event for Pangaia Metaphysical Store. We got our name out to local Pagans and made a decent amount of money off the endeavor.

Earlier this year we trekked up to Sioux City, Ia to participate in the First Annual Mystic Realities Bazaar. Due to a scheduling conflict for the city, it was not nearly as successful as it could have been, but the hosts learned a lot and are looking forward to doing it again next year. And we are looking forward to attending next year.

I also participated in the Mind*Body*Spirit Expo in Sioux City, hosted by the now defunct Namaste shop in Sioux City. I attended as an intuitive reader, specializing in past life insight. It was a busy weekend despite the weather. We started our with a freak ice storm the morning of the show, but by noon it was bright and sunny and people were just flooding into the building to see what we all had to offer. Once people started visiting my table I could not get a chance to breathe. And for that event, Wytch Way Wear and I took part in an article written by a local reporter. Very interesting experience that.

So, this coming weekend is Mysitc Fest, which means that for the first time ever, Pagan-Musings is not doing a live show. We suggest that our listeners tune into one of our archived episodes or listen to an archival episode of Musica Pagani, also on BTR.

We do play a lot of Damh the Bard on Pagan-Musings. He is such a talented artist and was one of the first to be gracious enough to share his music with us. You can listen to more of his music and interviews with Druids and other Pagans on his podcast, DruidCast.

Terri Liles Mason's Om Gaia is a beautiful CD and well worth the listen. Her album was nominated for best new age meditation and best new age vocal album of the year in 2009.

Jeffrey Fisher's Satyagraha is inspired by the words and actions of Ghandi, peaceful protest and mindful action. Moonrise is a beautiful piece and well aprpopriate for any phase of the moon.

Riad Abdel-Gawad is one of the newest artists for me to encounter. His mix of traditional and modern instrumentation lends a very unique and appealing thread to Egyptian and Middle Eastern music. Papyrus and Calligraphy is one of my favorites off the CD and just seems to set the tone for me when it comes to writing and thinking about Ancient Egypt, one of the homes for the Gods that talk inside my head.

The Mystery Revealed by Bear is just one of many tracks on Untroubled that feel so right to listen to when meditating or preparing for the start of the day. Unfortunately we have not played much from Bear on any ofthe shows I work with, but I look forward to remedying that soon.

Last but not least, we ended the show with Quarter Farewell by Isaac Bonewits and Real Magic of their 1972 recording of Avalon is Rising! With the recent passing of Isaac, I have been listening tohis music and reading his books with new insights. And they have become inspiration for me in my NaNoWriMo project this November.

Phil Gets Roasted on Pagan-Musings

Today on Pagan-Musings, KaliSara instigated a Roast of RevKess (aka Phil, the author of this blog). Wikipedia defines a roast thus:

A roast is an event in which an individual is subjected to a public presentation of comedic insults, praise, outlandish true and untrue stories, and heartwarming tributes, the implication being that the roastee is able to take the jokes in good humor and not as serious criticism or insult, and therefore, show their good nature. It is seen by some as a great honor to be roasted, as the individual is surrounded by friends, fans, and well-wishers, who can receive some of the same treatment as well during the course of the evening. The party and presentation itself are both referred to as a roast. The host of the event is called the roastmaster. Anyone who is honored in such a way is said to have been "roasted".

And Sarah did play the role of roastmaster very well. With callers and comments in the chat rooms, we had a wonderful today during the show. Sarah told how she and I first met, via ISCABBS and we talked about some of experiences at ISCAnics in Iowa City, IA. Those were certainly fun and interesting. Some of the stories were editted to protect the not-so-innocent as well as to protect ourselves.

Listener and friend ChrisInSA called in to talk about some of our adventures when she lived in Lincoln. We met over a D&D gaming session and things went down hill from there. We LARPed, did Karaoke and even performed in a Drag Production at the Q in Lincoln. The Daily Nebraskan did a story on that show and they talk about Sarah in the article.

Sarah's partner and father ofher daughter, Stormcrow, called in to say that he thinks of me as the most "epicly straight gay man" he has ever met. He also related the story of calling me one night when I was late coming home from work. Stormie and I used to room together and we both worked for the same company, just different facilities. My first night on the job I wound up working twelve hours, which was much longer than he thought I would be there. So he called me wondering where I was. I was driving home when he called. Just as I answered the phone I saw police lights in my rearview mirror. The officer pulled me over because he thought I was drunk, I had apparently swerved over into his lane as I answered the phone. Lucky for me he took me at my word that I was just very tired and he let me go with a verbal warning.

And of course we had to talk about the Pagan Alliance Network and some of the incidents involved there. At the discussion group we had a member who was rather young and not educated in the U.S., so some of the terms we were using were unfamiliar to him. These terms were not necessarily Pagan specific. We found that it was easier to hand him a dictionary as soon ashe entered the room. Saved him the time of being lost and confused while waiting for the chance to ask what something meant.

There was also the Samhain that we did hand dipped candles and carved pumpkins in preparation for the ritual. We had a blast making the candles and carving the pumpkins. I even roasted the seeds as part of the ritual feast.

We also plotted some of the future shows. Coming up on the 18th is Witch in the Kitchen, a discussion of Kitchen Witchery. On the 25th we are going to discuss Pagan Expos & Metaphysical Events, past, present, and future that we have been involved with. On October 2nd we will be in Omaha for Mystic Fest 2010 and will be airing a repeat of one of our earlier shows. But we will be back on the 9th with part three of Sacred Sexuality, LBGT+ Pagans and sacred sexuality.

And of course we had some pre-Mysitc Fest chatter. Sarah and I have been working on make improvements to the store's website, www.pangaiastore.com. We have also made some adjustments to our store logo and will be preparing to feature many unique and wonderful items at Mystic Fest. Rev Moonbeam is certifiable

As of last Thursday (May 13th), I am finally officially certified at KZUM as a programmer. Woot! Somehow or another the paper work got lost from last fall. Either on Murf's end or in the office. But I stopped in Thursday morning to do Polka Celebration with the Polka Goddess herself, Katerina (who dubbed me the High Priest of Polka), and went over the paper work with Josh the Program Manager. It is official now. I am a certified KZUM programmer. Woot, woot!

The Mess pays Tribute to LA Hussey

Murf decided to do an impromptu tribute to Leigh Anne Hussey, a wonderful artists. She passed away three years ago in a tragic motorcycle accident. Oddly enough, her last interview was on Murphy's Magic Mess here at KZUM. With this collection of music, our listeners have been treated to a selection they have not heard in a long time or maybe never have heard. You can find all of Leigh Anne's music at www.motogrrl.org/Bands. She did two solo albums, several with Annwn, and two other bands known as Nuit and Uglytown. The Uglytown CD was never released as it was in production at the time of her death.

Hosted by the Order of the Red Grail, Church for Transformational Wicca, this circle is open to any and all who wish to attend. Greetings and Blessings Upon You! thank you for listening to Murphy's Magick Mess this foggy morning. Looking out the studio window, we see a bit of skyline, but lots of fog and mist to gaze through. One of our favorite CD's here at the Mess, Om Gaia by Terri Liles Mason, has been nominated for best vocal album and best new age and meditation CD of the year by internet and radio broadcasters. The artist herself has been nominated as best new artist of the year. We are very thrilled to be hearing about that. We have played the title track a number of times over the last several months and can't seem to get enough of it. One of my Trad Sisters in Colorado enjoyed hearing it so much that she called me one morning after the show a few months ago and went "I want!" So I gave her the info on how to order the CD and she went on line and ordered it right away. We are definitely looking forward to hearing more new stuff from Terri Liles Mason in the near future.

Tomorrow starts the Spring 2010 Pledge Drive. We certainly hope to hear from many of our listeners during the pledge drive at KZUM. Murf, Damon, and myself, along with helpers, will be taking calls Sunday the 7th and the 14th during the Mess. And remember, you can always visit the KZUM website to make a pledge.

Winter Holiday Mess

Murf and her minions are preparing for the Winter Holidays with a mess of holiday favorites, old and new. Be sure to tune in each week to hear what new and exciting music we have found, as well as keep up to date on some of the Pagan news, both local and world wide. You can catch us live on the radio at 89.3 FM in Lincoln, Ne, on Time Warner Cable channel 10 in Lincoln and surrounding areas, and on the web at KZUM's web site with streaming audio. You can also catch our recent shows on our MySpace page (due to FCC regulations we are only able to provide the show as a video stream (non-download) for a period not to exceed 14 days from original post date).

We sincerely apologize to our online listeners that the show was not available for streaming this morning. We were informed by the host of Glorious Gospel that one of their listeners had called, but he was not sure who to call. Emails and phone calls were made over the course of the show and we hope to have gotten the problem fixed. Unfortunately it did not happen during our broadcast.

But, we were able to actually record the show this morning. We had been having equipment issues for the last couple of weeks, but those have been taken care for the nonce. You will be able to catch today's show on the MySpace page.

As it is Yule season, we have been playing a selection of holiday music, both vocal and instrumental. The Mess gets Esoteric

Greetings to one and all! Thank you for listening to Murphy's Magic Mess, either via radio or through our streaming audio on KZUM's home page. You may have noticed that the KZUM site has been seriously updated. Take a look around and see what it has to offer. The streaming audio still has a few kinks, but our program director can access things from home fix it in a pinch. Just let us know at the station and we will be glad to give him a call.

Wowsa! Today Murf and her minions got a little bit crazy. Well, crazier than usual. So much of what we said off air would have gotten us in to some MAJOR trouble. So thank the Gods we know how to mute the mics.

We experienced a few technical difficulties during the early part of the show. Seems something was disabled, malfunctioning or total kaputz in the sound studio and Damon was unable to record the show this morning. The cable for me to hook up to my laptop was also missing, so I was not able to record it in his stead. So, this show will not be available on the MySpace page for the show. The Mess Remembers Veterans with Music

Murf is a veteran herself and feels strongly that all our brothers and sisters in the armed forces deserve the honor and respect that they have earned. Like many of our listeners, you either love or you hate Kenny Klein's Dead Gerbil Jam. Dale Bacon hates it and he wrote and recorded his thoughts on the song. We played that for the first time ever on the Mess, Anti-Gerbil Song is a funny take on how some people react to the song. It would appear that Murf will be using that as a bait during future pledge drives. :)

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT DALE BACON:
Dale Bacon is a long time fixture of the Lincoln Pagan Community. A druid and story teller, most everyone Lincoln seems to know who he is. Either long time listeners of KZUM, local history buffs, or even just your casual about town person, Dale is a popular guy. He's been dabbling in filmography for years and has recently begun releasing a series of DVDs. Song of Amergin was the first release and is available at Pangaia Metaphysical Store. His latest release, A Haunted History of Lincoln - the Capitol City, was released on October 6th and is available through Pangaia as well as Here & Back Again and the Next Millennium. This is the first installment in his series on Supernatural Nebraska. Future releases include a history of witchcraft in Nebraska, which Murf and myself are mentioned in.

Haelsa and welcome! Thank you once again for listening to Murphy's Magic Mess on KZUM 89.3, Lincoln's Community Radio Station. This morning was quite the trip. For a change Damon was actually being quiet, even off the air. Something about not enough sleep and being lulled into a semi-slumber by the lovely music by Matthew Labarge. We did surprise Murf with a belated birthday present: a 12x6” patch for her denim jacket of a green Asian dragon. As she said, it looks a lot like the dragon she sees when her totem visits her. So it was quite the fitting gift. She expresses her thanks to Damon, Eddie, and myself for the gift.

I was very pleased to see that Dale Bacon brought in the audio tracks for his DVD Song of Amergin. As I am sure you noted, we also had two poems that Dale Bacon had recorded. Both of them were provided to him by Nadine Murphy. Her adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's Folk of the Hill and one of Nadine's own poems, Three White Deer. Pangaia will be contacting Dale Bacon about carrying that CD as well.

Speaking of Dale Bacon, he is the host of the Ghosts of Lincoln Guided Tour every October. You can hear his soothing storyteller's voice as he guides you through some of the ghostly hotspots of Lincoln. This tour is sponsored in part by Exploring unexplained Phenomena (Saturday mornings at 10:30am on KZUM) hosted by Scott Colbourn (The Way Home, now closed) and StarTran. I will provide more details on this year's tour schedule as they become available to me.

The 27^th is my grand experiment. KZUM's station manager is going to be certifying me on the boards and other equipment during the show. I get to put together the entire show, from start to finish. Murf, Damon, and Eddie may be bringing in some of their own selections for the show, but otherwise it is up to me. And with Murf and the station manager's permission, I am going to introduce a slightly new concept to the show. Pagan news, talk, and interview. My first planned interview for the show is with Charlie Ordorizzi of Next Millennium in Omaha, the host of Mystic Fest 2009. We will be talking briefly about the history of Mystic Fest and what is happening with this year's show. We may also talk about Next Millennium and the growth of Paganism in Nebraska over the last decade or so.

Damon is still working on getting things correctly set up to post each week's show (for a two week period) as a video file. This means that you will be able to listen to the show whenever you want during those two weeks, but you will not be able to download. FCC regulations prevent us from being able to podcast the shows for download, so we are using the MySpace video option as a means of sharing the show for a short time so that more people can enjoy it no matter what time of day they are able to listen.

Murphy's Birthday Show

Hello, everyone! And thank you for listening to Murf's birthday show. We were so excited this morning. We had everything set up to record the show. But guess what. Silly me, I forgot to disable the external microphone on the laptop and we not only recorded the show, but we recorded EVERYTHING that went on off air. Banter, kavitching about politics, plotting future shows and phone calls. So, the recording is not good. Another no go, but at least we know how to do it now. LOL Yay for technology. It is the Mess, so it takes a while to get everything all figured out whenever KZUM decides to change the devices around on us.

It was a great show, though. Lots of Murf's favorites. Phil Coulter to SJ Tucker, Lisa Hilton to local artist Gary Redden. And there will be more of her favorites to come. Just be patient...

...The show on September 6th is not going to be our regular programming. Back by popular demand, KZUM is doing their Blues Blowout! From 6am Saturday the 5th through 11:59pm Monday the 7th KZUM is playing nothing but Blues music. All other programming has been preempted during that time. Damon and Ed will be running the boards on the 6th, providing our die hard listeners, and our Blues fans, with New Age and Pagan friendly Blues....or at least as close as they can get and still be Blues. Be ready for instrumentals by Lisa Hilton of her Twilight and Blues, and lyrical and instrumental Blues by Pagan artists such as Leigh Anne Hussey and Kenny Klein. They will also be playing more mainstream Blues with a New Agey flare.

We are moving into the month of September. Can you believe it? Fall is almost upon us. Of course with the wonderful weather we have been having the last few days, it is believeable. And with Fall just around the corner that means that Mabon is very close as well.

On the 13th we are planing to play a lot more of Murf's favorites, as two hours is far from enough time to cover it all. We will also be playing some of my own favorites, my birthday is the 14th.
